From global illuminated manuscripts to William Blake (the poet/artist engraver), from American conceptual art in the 1960’s, 70’s, and 80’s (Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger, Lawrence Weiner, etc.) to contemporary artists like Glenn Ligon, Mark Bradford, and Ann Hamilton, humans have always had the impulse to combine text and image in ways that expand beyond illustration. In this 4-week mixed media course, you’ll learn some new ways of thinking about the text-and-image relationship from an artist who has been thinking about this her entire career. We’ll engage in discussions, try some poetic exercises, do visual experiments, and learn many methods of combining text with visuals to conceptually stretch what you already know. You do not need to be a poet for this, but you do need to be curious and open to experimenting.
