Class Description

Learn how to create naturally dyed fabric by applying kitchen scraps such as onion skins, coffee grounds, and avocado pits directly onto silk fabric. Experiment with food-safe natural dye ingredients like turmeric and cochineal as you add pops of color to your fabric. The workshop kit includes most of the items necessary to create a colorful, unique silk scarf. Other materials can be found in your kitchen or garden.

Student Information

Ages 13 and up, are welcome to register for this workshop.


Kit includes:

  • Alum
  • Ground cochineal
  • Ground turmeric
  • Silk Scarf
  • Silk fabric for practice
  • Some twine and crochet thread


Supplies Students need:

  • Stainless steel or enamel pot with lid
  • Vegetable steamer, example
  • Glass measuring cup 
  • Stainless steel or plastic measuring spoons

pick and choose based on what you have available

  • Onion skins from yellow and/or red onions
  • Used coffee grounds
  • Avocado skins and pits
  • Pomegranate skins
  • Black tea leaves 


  • Marigolds (optional)
  • White or apple cider vinegar (optional)
  • Cream of tartar (optional)
  • Baking soda (optional)
  • Baking powder (optional)
  • Food scale with weight in grams (optional)

Helpful tip: Clean the skins well. Store dried grounds and skins in the freezer to prevent mold.


This interactive online class is presented via Zoom. Please download Zoom (, and register your email address prior to your first class.

You will be emailed Zoom meeting instructions, including a unique URL and meeting code to join the class at least 1 day before the start of the class. If you do not receive an email from your instructor or registered within 24 hours of the first scheduled class, please contact the front desk ASAP.

Class cancellations can happen if enrollment minimums are not met 2 days prior to the first class. If your class is canceled, you will be contacted via phone or email.

If your class comes with a required or optional kit:  All kits will be available for contactless pick-up the week prior to the start date.
