Level: MultiLevel

Price: LAC Members $160.00 / Non-Members $165.00

Class Description

Learn to make relief prints by carving and inking linoleum blocks. This class includes detailed instruction on tools, techniques, and the translation of ideas. We will concentrate on single block approaches, and have the opportunity to incorporate collage and monoprint techniques for even greater creativity. Works will be printed by hand, without the need for a press, using water-miscible ink to make clean up easy. All levels welcome

Student Information

$20 optional kit includes one 6x9 linoleum block + small practice blocks, lino cutting tools, bench hook, anti-skid fabric, wooden spoon for printing, acetate for inking palette, plus carbon paper to get through the first week’s class. Students may decline starter kit if they already have supplies.

Additionally, students will need to purchase the following in order to complete their print(s):

-Soft rubber brayer: we recommend 3” or 4” Speedball. This 2 1/2” Scratch-Art Brayer will work, but is not quite as nice. Just be sure to get a soft rubber brayer.

-Water miscible ink, which cleans up with dish soap and hot water, but dries permanent: we recommend Charbonnel Aquawash 59 ml Black tube. Akua 60 ml Black jar, or Speedball 2.5 oz. Black Fabric and Paper Block Printing Ink will also work. You only need one color, and you can also choose a different color than black.

-Paper to print on: this Japanese Sketch Paper Pad is a great value and prints beautifully. There are plenty of other Asian-style papers that will also work including Kitakata or Mulberry.

Students need to provide their own pencil, eraser, waxed paper for palette, and clean-up supplies. Additional blocks and supplies can be purchased online. A list of optional supplies will be available from the instructor.
