Class Description

Learn how to naturally dye wool yarn with food-safe ingredients in your kitchen. Discover a beautiful range of colors from onion skins, coffee grounds, turmeric, and more. Our Teaching Artist will guide you through each step as you dye your own yarn for future projects, and learn about additional dye supplies that can be found in your grocery store or garden. Ages 13 and up are welcome to register for this class. No experience necessary All levels welcome

Student Information

Supplies Students need:

  • A large stainless steel or enamel pot or two with lids (we are using food safe ingredients) No copper, example
  • Some Potassium Aluminum Sulfate, example, can be found at the grocery store
  • 1 Skein or ball of unbleached wool yarn
  • Glass measuring cup 
  • Stainless steel or plastic measuring spoons
  • Wooden or plastic stirring spoon
  • Oven mitts
  • A large bowl 
  • Nylon stocking or nut milk bag, the strain dye material


Pick and choose an ingredient or two based on what is available

  • Yellow and/or red onion skins 
  • Used coffee grounds
  • Avocado skins and pits
  • Turmeric
  • Black tea leaves 
  • Marigolds

Helpful tip: Clean the skins well. Store dried grounds, skins and pits in the freezer to prevent mold.


This interactive online class is presented via Zoom. Please download Zoom (, and register your email address prior to your first class.

You will be emailed Zoom meeting instructions, including a unique URL and meeting code to join the class at least 1 day before the start of the class. If you do not receive an email from your instructor or registered within 24 hours of the first scheduled class, please contact the front desk ASAP.

Class cancellations can happen if enrollment minimums are not met 2 days prior to the first class. If your class is canceled, you will be contacted via phone or email.

If your class comes with a required or optional kit:  All kits will be available for contactless pick-up the week prior to the start date.
