Class Description

Take your garment-making skills to the next level. Our Teaching Artist will show you the tricks of the trade as you learn shirt specific stitches, seam finishings, collars, jacket facings, and more. Use your new skills as you make a top from a pattern of your choice. Finish with a skillfully made garment that you will be proud to wear. Ages 13 and up are welcome to register for this class. Prerequisite: Two department sewing classes or equivalent experience

Student Information

Supplies Students will need:

  • A commercial shirt, blouse, jacket or blazer pattern, Simplicity, Butterick, McCall’s, Vogue offer a range of patterns from easy to advanced skill levels. Choose a pattern that is within your skill level or a slight challenge (will be discussed during first class).
  • A table or work space to spread out
  • Tailors chalk, pencil or water soluble fabric marker 
  • Sewing pins 
  • Thread
  • Seam ripper
  • Fabric scissors
  • Paper scissors
  • 1 yard of muslin or 100% cotton to test sewing techniques
  • Fabric and notions for your final garment (will be discussed during first class)
  • Sewing machine 
  • Measuring tape
  • Ruler, example, or similar

You will be emailed Zoom meeting instructions, including a unique URL and meeting code to join the class at least 1 day before the start of the class. If you do not receive an email from your instructor or registered within 24 hours of the first scheduled class, please contact the front desk ASAP.

Class cancellations can happen if enrollment minimums are not met 2 days prior to the first class. If your class is canceled, you will be contacted via phone or email.

If your class comes with a required or optional kit:  All kits will be available for contactless pick-up the weekend prior to the session's start date, Thursday, September 10 (Session I) & Thursday, October 15 (Session II), between 12-3 pm.
