Class Description

Learn the basics of hand sewing and pattern making from home. Create samples of stitches, hems, and seams. Formal instruction includes weekly demonstrations of hand sewing and pattern making techniques. During this online class, you will learn how to sew your own face mask and a customizable decorative pillowcase. Ages 13 and up, with required prerequisites, are welcome to register for this class.

Student Information

Students will need:

  • Black or dark thread, example
  • A few hand sewing needles, example
  • Some fabric to practice sewing, 100% quilting cotton or muslin fabric is best, example
  • Some sewing pins
  • Scissors
  • Ruler, example, or similar 
  • Tailors chalk example, or water soluble fabric pencil example
  • 1/2 yard 100% cotton fabric for face mask
  • Matching thread
  • 1/2 yard of medium weight fabric for decorative pillowcase, keep in mind you will be hand sewing through 2-3 layers
  • Matching thread
  • Pillow form 12” x 18” maximum, keep in mind you will be hand sewing at least 2 long rows of hand stitches
  • Thimble (optional)


You will be emailed Zoom meeting instructions, including a unique URL and meeting code to join the class at least 1 day before the start of the class. If you do not receive an email from your instructor or registered within 24 hours of the first scheduled class, please contact the front desk ASAP.

Class cancellations can happen if enrollment minimums are not met 2 days prior to the first class. If your class is canceled, you will be contacted via phone or email.

If your class comes with a required or optional kit:  All kits will be available for contactless pick-up the weekend prior to the session's start date, Thursday, September 10 (Session I) & Thursday, October 15 (Session II), between 12-3 pm.
