Develop your own language of mark making through a series of activities structured to develop your painterly instincts. Learn to trust your intuition while generating original ideas and expressing the unconscious. Exercises will include color studies and experimentation, the use of non-traditional paint brushes, using gravity or other natural forces to move paint, adding "chance" to your creative process, and finding inspiration in sound.

Student Information

All paint media is welcome: oils, acrylics, watercolor. For the first day of class, have canvas paper or stretched canvas, drawing paper or newsprint, choice of paint in black, white, and burnt umber, matte medium, brushes, and scissors.

If working in acrylics and need to purchase materials, here are some suggested supplies:

Paint: Tubes or jars (5 ounces or more) of a warm and a cool of each primary color plus black, white, and burnt umber. Use the following pigments as a guide
titanium white
cadmium yellow light
Cadmium yellow medium
alizarin crimson
cadmium red light
cerulean blue
ultramarine blue
burnt umber
black

Brushes: An assortment of bristle flats sizes 8-12
Palette knife: trowel style where the knife is lower than the handle.
Palette Paper or Reusable Palette
Pad of Canvas Paper:  As this is a playful and experimental class, I recommend purchasing a pad of canvas paper to work on  (or watercolor paper if using watercolor).
Stretched Canvas-you can get inexpensive packs of stretched canvas at Michael's.
Drawing tools: An assortment of drawing tools such as pencils, charcoal, and pastels would be great to have.
Pad of Newsprint or Drawing Paper
Acrylic Matte Medium- to be used as adhesive for collage.
Small sealable containers to keep mixed colors in week to week.
Rags or paper towels
Smock (or studio quality clothing)
