Class Description

Learn how to make naturally dyed fabric by applying kitchen scraps like onion skins, coffee grounds, and more directly onto a silk scarf. Class kits will be available for curbside pickup at Lillstreet, including alum, crochet thread, silk fabric to practice and a silk scarf. Other materials can be found in your kitchen or garden. No experience necessary All levels welcome

Student Information

Supplies in kit:

  • Silk Scarf
  • Silk fabric for practice
  • Some twine and crochet thread
  • Alum

 

Supplies Students need:

pick and choose based on what is available

  • Onion skins from yellow and/or red onions
  • Used coffee grounds
  • Avocado skins and pits
  • Turmeric
  • Pomegranate skins
  • Black tea leaves 
  • Stainless steel or enamel pot with lid
  • Vegetable steamer, example
  • Glass measuring cup 
  • Stainless steel or plastic measuring spoons
  • Marigolds (optional)
  • White or apple cider vinegar (optional)
  • Cream of tartar (optional)
  • Baking soda (optional)
  • Baking powder (optional)
  • Food scale with weight in grams (optional)

Helpful tip: Clean the skins well. Store dried grounds and skins in the freezer to prevent mold.

 

This interactive online class is presented via Zoom. Please download Zoom (www.zoom.us), and register your email address prior to your first class.

You will be emailed Zoom meeting instructions, including a unique URL and meeting code to join the class at least 1 day before the start of the class. If you do not receive an email from your instructor or registered within 24 hours of the first scheduled class, please contact the front desk ASAP.

Class cancellations can happen if enrollment minimums are not met 2 days prior to the first class. If your class is canceled, you will be contacted via phone or email.

If your class comes with a required or optional kit:  All kits will be available for contactless pick-up the week prior to the start date.
