Class Description

Learn how to alter garment patterns for a custom fit and style that is uniquely you. Our Teaching Artist will guide you through each step, including understanding pattern instructions, knowing what to change and how to change it, and creating a test fit muslin. End this online course with a pattern to use later. Fashion I: Garment Construction is the perfect next class to complete your new garment. Prerequisite: Two department sewing classes or equivalent experience

Student Information

Supplies Students will need:

  • A commercial garment pattern, Simplicity, Butterick, McCall’s, Vogue offer a range of patterns from easy to advanced skill level. Choose a pattern that is within your skill level.
  • A table or work space to spread out
  • Scotch Magic tape, or masking tape
  • Artist tape or painter tape
  • A roll of tracing paper, example. Or large sheets of tracing paper taped together
  • Mechanical pencil or pencil and sharpener 
  • Sewing pins 
  • Thread
  • Seam ripper
  • Fabric scissors
  • Paper scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Ruler, example, or similar
  • Curve ruler, example (optional)
  • Colored Pencils (optional) 
  • A few yards of muslin or mock up fabric that is similar to what your pattern calls for
  • Sewing machine (optional) or hand sewing needle

This interactive online class is presented via Zoom. Please download Zoom (www.zoom.us), and register your email address prior to your first class.

You will be emailed Zoom meeting instructions, including a unique URL and meeting code to join the class at least 1 day before the start of the class. If you do not receive an email from your instructor or registered within 24 hours of the first scheduled class, please contact the front desk ASAP by responding to this email.

Class cancellations can happen if enrollment minimums are not met 2 days prior to the first class. If your class is canceled, you will be contacted via phone or email.

If your class comes with a required or optional kit:  All kits will be available for contactless pick-up the week prior to the start date.
