Class Description

Discover a wide range of natural dye techniques from home. We will explore various colors and mordants on silk and cotton using scraps and extras from your kitchen. Learn new shibori techniques, more about the mordanting processes from home, and the dynamic range and strength of color from dyes such as cochineal, onion skins, coffee grinds, and avocado pits and peels. Class kits will be available for curbside pickup at Lillstreet, which includes some fabric, thread, alum and cochineal. Additional ingredients can be found in your kitchen. No experience necessary All levels welcome

Student Information

Supplies in kit:

  • Some silk fabric for samples
  • Some cotton fabric for samples
  • Some crochet thread, upholstery and needle
  • Alum
  • Cream of tartar
  • Cochineal
  • Some rubber bands
  • Some popsicle sticks

 

Supplies Students need:

  • A large stainless steel or enamel pot or two with lids (we are using food safe ingredients in the pots) example
  • Glass measuring cup
  • Stainless steel or plastic measuring spoons
  • Wooden or plastic dye-only stirring spoon
  • Oven mitts
  • 1 small bag dry soy beans
  • Yellow and/or red onion skins from 3 or more onions
  • At least 2 cups of used coffee grounds
  • Avocado skins and pits from 3 or more avocados
  • At least 2 tablespoons of turmeric
  • A cup of white or apple cider vinegar
  • Pomegranate skins (optional)
  • Black tea leaves (optional)
  • Marigold (optional)
  • Additional rubber bands (optional)
  • Additional popsicle sticks and/or chopsticks (optional)
  • Additional upholstery thread (optional)
  • Baking soda and/or powder (optional)
  • Food scale with grams (optional)

Helpful tip: Clean the skins well. Store dried grounds and skins in the freezer to prevent mold.

You will be emailed Zoom meeting instructions, including a unique URL and meeting code to join the class at least 1 day before the start of the class. If you do not receive an email from your instructor or registered within 24 hours of the first scheduled class, please contact the front desk ASAP by responding to this email.

Class cancellations can happen if enrollment minimums are not met 2 days prior to the first class. If your class is canceled, you will be contacted via phone or email.
