Class Description

Learn how to plant, harvest and create beautifully dyed fabric from flowers in your garden. Our Teaching Artist will guide you in planning a future garden of plants for natural dye, how to adapt your garden for indoor living and how to use what you may already have. During this online class you will learn how to dye silk with marigolds, cosmos and more, creating a collection of vibrant color samples.

Student Information

Kit includes:

  • Some silk fabric for samples
  • Alum
  • Cream of tartar
  • Some twine and crochet thread
  • Sewing needle
  • Some rubber bands
  • Some popsicle sticks


Students will need:

  • A large stainless steel or enamel pot with lid for dye only (Our ingredients are non toxic, but they are not all food safe) example
  • Glass measuring cup
  • Measuring spoons
  • Wooden or plastic dye only stirring spoon
  • Oven mitts
  • Cosmo flowers
  • Marigold flowers
  • Additional flowers to be determined
  • A journal or notebook to keep dye samples (optional)
  • Food scale with weight in grams (optional)

This interactive online class is presented via Zoom. Please download Zoom (, and register your email address prior to your first class.

You will be emailed Zoom meeting instructions, including a unique URL and meeting code to join the class at least 1 day before the start of the class. If you do not receive an email from your instructor or registered within 24 hours of the first scheduled class, please contact the front desk ASAP by responding to this email.

Class cancellations can happen if enrollment minimums are not met 2 days prior to the first class. If your class is canceled, you will be contacted via phone or email.

If your class comes with a required or optional kit:  All kits will be available for contactless pick-up the week prior to the start date.
